Handyman in Virginia

How to Hire a Handyman in Virginia

A Handyman is typically a one-person show, and some Handymen are a jack-of-all trades. A Handyman can complete a wide range of small repairs and maintenance, as long as the job does not exceed $1,000 for labor and material combined.

Know what projects you want your Handyman to perform:

  • List your projects, so a handyman can bundle all the projects at one time, involving one trip to your residence. (See Blog “Handyman vs. Contractor.”)

Do research:

  • Ask your neighbors or Facebook groups for referrals
  • Finding a Handyman online – Read the Google reviews – not just the overall rating
  • Although Handyman don’t need to be licensed in Virginia, some can carry a Class C, B, or A Contractor’s License (See Blog about “What to look for in a Contractor.”) If that is the case, ask the Handyman if they have a Contractor’s License and verify the information through VA Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. https://www.dpor.virginia.gov/LicenseLookup

Ask questions:

  • How did the Handyman learn their skill, i.e., self-taught or professional training? (Make sure you are comfortable with their background.)
  • How much do they charge for the projects? (Do they provide a written estimate in advance?)
  • Does the Handyman have a referral they can provide for a similar job?
  • Does the Handyman guarantee their work, in writing?
  • Does the Handyman have insurance? (In Virginia, since a Handyman does not need a license, there is no insurance requirement. However, some Handymen carry Liability Insurance and Worker’s Compensation, in case someone is injured, or property is damaged.) If they don’t have insurance and there is an accident and your property is damaged or someone is hurt, you will need to turn to your Homeowner’s Insurance for coverage.

Test the Handyman:

  • Have the Handyman complete one or two jobs and make sure you trust their work. If the Handyman completes the job incorrectly or not thorough enough, it can be a costly and time-consuming mistake … and your home is often your single biggest financial investment.

Most importantly: Use due diligence to ensure you TRUST your Handyman.
