The difference between a Handyman and a Contractor can sometimes be blurred. A Handyman does not need to be licensed in Virginia and can complete minor residential projects, like small home repairs and maintenance, typically involving one person, and not to exceed $1,000 (Labor and material combined).
However, a Residential Contractor is someone who completes larger projects (exceeding $1,000 in labor and material) or projects that become part of the home’s structure, such as construction, remodeling, repair, improvement, removal, or demolition on real property owned by another.
Below are just a few examples of common types of work that can be performed by a handyman:
- Minor repairs to drywall, flooring, doors, and decks
- Swapping light fixtures
- Small painting projects
- Installation of locks, shelves, etc.
- Hang pictures or curtains
- Caulking
- General maintenance
Below are some typical types of work that require a Contractor’s License:
- Drywall installation
- Rough and finish carpentry
- Structural framing
- Building a deck
- Constructing or remodeling an existing room
- Custom-designed projects
